Automatic payments from a debit card is the primary payment method and the date payment is taken each month is the move in date, although there is a working project to move everyone over to the 1st of the month billing.
Do I need insurance?
Ideally yes. We request every customer has either our enhanced liability protection – StoreProtect or their own self storage insurance cover for their goods. To make this simple, our StoreProtect cover is recommended at booking at a level of £15,000 for a 20ft container and £10,000 for an 8ft container as these are average values for the contents of a 20ft container. You can declare a different value by agreement with us, you can also provide your own insurance but we accept no liability for your goods when stored with us,
Please declare the full replacement value of everything you store. If you declare less than the true value, any claim will be reduced in proportion. A £50 administration fee is deducted from any claim settlement. StoreProtect is not an insurance policy; full details are on our Protecting your goods page.
Can I use my own insurance?
Yes, provided it covers goods in offsite storage for their full replacement value. Book as normal, then email a copy of your policy to info@safeandsoundstorage.co.uk before you move in.
What you can and cannot store
What am I not allowed to store?
For everyone's safety, the following must never be stored:
- Flammable, combustible or hazardous items, such as petrol, diesel, oils, gas bottles, paints, solvents and chemicals.
- Explosives, fireworks, firearms, ammunition or weapons.
- Asbestos, waste or polluting materials.
- Anything living, including plants and animals.
- Food or perishable goods, or anything that could rot, smell or attract vermin.
- Cash, jewellery, precious metals or stones, and other irreplaceable or very high value items.
- Illegal or stolen goods.
- Portable power banks and battery chargers.
- Vehicles or equipment with fuel in the tank or batteries connected, unless we have agreed this in writing.
The full list is in our Terms. If you are unsure about anything, please ask us before you bring it to site.
Can I store e-bikes, scooters or items with batteries?
Yes, within limits. You can store up to five e-bikes, e-scooters or similar items in one container, unless their batteries are removed and stored elsewhere. You can store up to ten laptops, tablets or similar items with built in batteries, unless we agree otherwise in writing. Items must be free from damage, stored with space around them and not stacked. We recommend storing batteries at the lowest practical charge. Batteries must not be charged on site unless we have agreed this.
Can I use my container as a workspace or business address?
No. Containers are for storage only. They cannot be used as an office, workshop or living space, or as a business or mailing address. Local businesses are very welcome to store stock, equipment and documents with us.
How do I keep my belongings in good condition?
Our containers are external units, so a little preparation goes a long way:
- Leave a gap between your items and the container walls so air can circulate.
- Make sure everything is completely dry before it goes in, including garden tools and white goods. Moisture introduced into a container tends to stay there.
- Use plastic boxes or vacuum bags for fabrics, bedding and clothing.
- Put heavy items at the bottom and lighter items on top, and never stack higher than is safe.
- Visit and check your belongings at least every three months to air the unit.
If something goes wrong
What should I do if I find loss or damage?
Email info@safeandsoundstorage.co.uk as soon as possible, before you remove any affected items from site. Include a description of what has been affected and photographs of the items in your container. You must then send us full details in writing within seven days. If you suspect theft, please also report it to the police and obtain a crime reference number. Please do not touch anything affected by mould or vermin.
